11. Lamp Shade

Functional, industrial materials entered the home in post-war Europe. As this lamp evidences, so did industrial design. This perforated teak lampshade was produced by Luxus Vittsjö in the 1950s. Its design is simple — a wooden shade with perforations to refract the light obscures a bare, hanging bulb. The design, which would be at home lighting a factory floor, is warmed by the traditional teak exterior. Was the home becoming a site of production too?

12. Robert Welch Candle Holder

Scandinavian producers may have led the way with the design and manufacture of stainless steel homeware. However, designers such as Robert Welch spread the style outside of Northern Europe. This triple candle holder in stainless steel with rosewood feet was a classic by Welch and became one of his most popular products produced by Old Hall in the 1960s. Welch, and his Scandinavian influences, defined the British ‘contemporary’ style.
